Wall penetrations for flue gas discharge and ventilation

A good wall duct is essential when you want to lead a flue gas exhaust or combustion air supply from the inside to the outside. Whether it concerns a HR boiler , VR boiler , open boiler or closed boiler : the right duct guarantees a safe discharge of flue gases and an efficient air supply. When installing a boiler or ventilation system, it is therefore important to pay attention to the right dimensions, material and compatibility with your boiler type. Below you can read what you should pay attention to and what options there are.

Why is a good wall duct important?

  • Safety : A correctly installed flue gas and ventilation system prevents harmful substances, such as carbon monoxide, from entering your home.
  • Efficiency : With the right wall duct, your appliance (e.g. boiler or ventilation unit) will work optimally, which will result in lower energy costs and better air quality.
  • Regulations : Flue gas discharge and combustion air supply must often comply with legal requirements (e.g. CE markings). With the correct feed-through, you comply with building and safety regulations.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a wall duct?

  1. Type of boiler

    • HR boiler (High Efficiency): Usually concentric systems (flue gas exhaust and air supply in one pipe), special, well-insulated wall ducts.
    • VR boiler (Improved Efficiency): Often a little simpler, but still with the right insulation to limit heat loss.
    • Open boiler : Draws combustion air directly from the room. Pay extra attention to sufficient ventilation and safe flue gas discharge.
    • Closed boiler : Uses a discharge and supply pipe to the outside. A good airtight system is essential.
  2. Dimensions & material

    • Measure the diameter of your drain and choose a wall duct that fits exactly. Common diameters are 60/100, 80/125 and 100/150 mm (concentric).
    • Choose heat-resistant and durable material, such as stainless steel or special plastic (PP) that is resistant to high temperatures and condensation.
  3. Insulation & condensate drainage

    • At high temperature differences condensation can occur in the flue gas exhaust. Make sure that your wall duct is resistant to moisture and corrosion.
    • Good insulation prevents heat loss and minimizes the risk of leaks or mold formation.
  4. Assembly & maintenance

    • Check whether the wall duct is suitable for the thickness of your wall and whether there is sufficient space for mounting.
    • Regular maintenance (cleaning the flue gas exhaust) extends the service life and guarantees safety.
